These varieties are all closely related. Shiraz is Syrah, but is grown in Australia. Petite Sirah is thought to be a close relative of Syrah. These varieties usually produce deep-colored wines that have rich tannic characteristics and flavors of spice and pepper, tar and hints of smokiness. With age they exhibit blackcurrant, plum, and blackberry flavors.
